I’m often asked to tell what computational linguistics is and it’s just hard to come up with a comprehensive response on the fly, so here’s a written succinct take at it:
Computational linguistics is an interdisciplinary field that applies the techniques of computer science, applied mathematics, statistics and engineering to address linguistic problems. Some of these problems involve the development of computational and statistical data analysis methods and in developing mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques. By these means it addresses the theoretical and experimental questions of scientific research topics in the field.
